3 tips to help ease the transition back to work

If you’ve been away from work for a length of time, making the transition back can be a challenging prospect – especially if you were away for a health-related reason, such as disability or stress leave. You may be experiencing side effects to treatment plans, inadequate support or an inability to carry out your role in the same way.

A successful return can be a complex journey that requires personalized support from several sources. To ease the process:

  • Consult with your doctor: Speak with your doctor about when and how you might be ready to go back to work. It may be possible for you to return to work on a trial period to test how it goes or reduce your hours while you are recovering.
  • Ask for additional workplace support: Many companies provide employee assistance programs, flexible working arrangements and ergonomic furniture or equipment that can help set you up for success.
  • Check what your insurance policy covers: Disability insurance acts as a financial safety net for unexpected injuries or illness that can affect your ability to earn an income. In addition, some insurance companies offer services that can connect you with rehabilitation specialists, assistive devices, ergonomic assessments and even support with job searching and boosting your skills.
