Done your taxes? Have time to help someone else?

Volunteering can provide a chance to stay active in your community while helping those in need, whether you’re retired, working part-time or getting your degree.

To find a good fit, think about things you enjoy doing, what skills you have to offer and where opportunities are available. Beyond the obvious, like food banks and animal shelters, you might be surprised by the variety of opportunities out there.

For example, if you’re always first out of the gate to file your taxes or you’re one of those people who actually enjoy the process, then joining other volunteers across the country at a free tax-clinic might be just up your alley.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, or the Income Tax Assistance – Volunteer Program in Quebec, is a tradition that has provided free tax help to people over the past 50 years in most of Canada and 35 years in Quebec.

If you’re not great with numbers, that’s okay. Volunteers can take on many different roles, like scheduling, greeting, interpreting or doing tax returns.

Whether you prepare tax returns or provide support, you help people who are unable to do their taxes on their own. This gives them access to benefit and credit payments that can make a big difference in their lives. You can also gain some tax knowledge.

Program volunteers receive tax preparation training, guidance, access to a dedicated help line and free tax-software. You can choose to give a little or a lot of your time, depending on your schedule.

Find more information or register to volunteer with the program at canada.ca/taxes-volunteer or call 1-800-959-8281.
