How to give sustainable gifts this holiday season

by | Jan 1, 2024 | Finance and Business, Home and Living

As we head into the holidays, many of us are looking to celebrate the season in an environmentally responsible way. Here are a few options to make sustainable gift-giving choices you can feel good about.

Reusable packaging: Skip the one-time-use wrapping paper this year and look for reusable or recyclable materials to make your gifts stand out. Gift bags are great because they can be reused multiple times. You can even purchase upcycled fabric or sustainably made gift bags in natural cotton, burlap, wool and other materials to go that extra mile. Or get the kids to add colourful drawings to yesterday’s newspaper to create your own custom gift wrap.

Experience over consumerism: Instead of buying a physical gift for someone on your list, consider giving an experience, such as tickets to an event or a dinner out. Make it personal — and budget-friendly — with an offer to walk the dog every day for a week or help tend next spring’s garden.

Gifts that give back: Consider gifts that are both environmentally friendly and make a meaningful difference. Plan International Canada’s Gifts of Hope program lets you select from a series of goods and essential services that support children and families in need. For example, you can give a gift of baby chicks, goats or other farm animals, a hive of bees or a community vegetable garden. You also have the option to download a printable gift card to share with your recipient.
