Taking care of your yard when you have back pain

Yardwork and gardening are a great way to get some exercise and de-stress outdoors. But if back pain, mobility issues or other health conditions are getting in the way, don’t be discouraged. There are many things you can do to continue tending to your space.

A health-care professional, such as an occupational therapist, can help you develop strategies so you can keep doing the activities you value. They can assess your needs and recommend ways you can continue to enjoy your garden every season. Cushions or a chair may reduce the strain on your back and knees. There are also specialized tools like garden scooters and long-handled trowels that can help when bending forward.

Occupational therapists licensed by the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario provide safe, competent and ethical care to you and your family. Find more information at coto.org/ot
